Who Is Your Role Model?
By: Mark Rowe
It was Charles Barkley who once did a Nike commercial that was made famous by the first line which stated: “I am not a role model.” The rest of the monologue said this: “I am not paid to be a role model. I am paid to wreck havoc on the basketball court. Parents should be role models. Just because I dunk a basketball, doesn’t mean I should raise your kids.”
I was reminded of this tonight as I watched part one of the Lance Armstrong interview in which he confessed to using performance enhancing drugs throughout his cycling career. Millions of people throughout the world had put Lance Armstrong up on a pedestal as a hero–a larger than life figure that could do no wrong. He carried that facade around for almost twenty years, all of which while carrying a lie in his heart.
What does the Bible say about who should be our role model? The answer is found in the book of Hebrews:
“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scoring its shame, and sat down at the right hand of God.” (Hebrews 12:2)
The Bible makes it clear that only Jesus Christ is worthy of “role model” status in our lives! As Life Community Church continues to “Live for Christ, Learn from Christ and Love Christ”, let’s strive to keep that motto at the center of our hearts!
